Snip and prevent! Medically performed adult male circumcision: a strategy for reducing the transmission of HIV
Abstract
Recent randomised trials done in South Africa and on the African continent have rekindled the debate on male circumcision for conditions which may or may not occur in the future.
Method
The recent literature on adult male circumcision for the prevention of HIV transmission was reviewed. The traditional, religious, ethical, and public health issues of the introduction of male circumcision as a public health measure is discussed.
Conclusion
The main HIV strategies of single partner relationships and consistent condom use should remain the main strategic policy against this pandemic.
